About Us

The Center for Studies on Sex/Gender, Allostasis, and Resilience (CESAR) was founded in 2018 by Dr. Robert-Paul Juster.

With his team, Dr. Juster leads interdisciplinary research projects aimed at better understanding and improving mental health for everyone.

The CESAR laboratory is affiliated with the Montreal Mental Health University Institute (IUSMM) and the University of Montreal.

Our mission

The research conducted by CESAR focuses on the study of stress in relation to sex and gender.

By exploring various biological and socio-cultural factors, our studies aim to identify each individual's needs regarding their physical and mental health. Our goal is to highlight the unique characteristics of underrepresented populations in health research while contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge on the concepts of sex/gender, allostasis, and resilience.

We focus on three main research areas:

  • Sex and gender

  • Stress and resilience

  • Organizational mental health

Our values

The values of CESAR align with those of the Research Center at the Montreal Mental Health University Institute, to which the laboratory is affiliated.

We strive to promote:

  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion

  • Respect and humanity

  • Excellence

  • Ethics

  • Creativity and innovation

  • Collaboration

  • Knowledge sharing and exchange

  • Decolonization of knowledge

Our funding

Our research projects are funded by various organizations such as the Quebec Research Funds, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and other internal funds.
